Match Report 2014 Chorley Golf Club
Ten players turned up at a cloudy Chorley golf course for the eighth Parrot's golf outing of 2014. We welcomed a new member to the society, Alan Bradley, a former member of Wentworth!
The morning, scores ranged from the 12 of Trevor Middleton, through the 16's of myself, Geoff Moyle and Jim Clayton too, in joint second place, Phil Matthews and Paul Greenaway with 17.
However the winner was a familiar name on the morning winner roster, namely Dave Bamber who scored a creditable 18 points.
At lunch time we all agreed that with the wind getting up in the afternoon, making the speedy greens even faster, scoring would be slightly more difficult, and a winning score of 32-34 could be expected.
Alan was in the first threeball, and must have wondered what had hit him, as his playing partners, Dave Bamber and Geoff Moyle both went out in 20 points. However, Geoffrey tired as usual, to finish with 32 points which was the same score as Dave ended up with, but still a decent target to beat.
I was next out with Jim and Trevor. I don't think I've ever been 10 points behind anyone after 5 holes of golf, but I was on this occasion.
The Middleton Kid was back! His score of 22 points after 9 holes was more than that of myself and The Claydermeister combined. Trevor maintained his good form on the back 9 to record 17 points for an excellent total of 39 points.
Surely this would be a winning score? as the last group consisted only of a few old blokes tootling about in buggies.
Phil, after his 17 points in the morning, took 16 holes to equal that score in the afternoon, and finished with a total of 20 points.
Mossy should have stayed in his butcher's shop with his dead meat as he only scored 25 points.
Player in form, and overall leader, T.J. added 8 points to his overall total with a creditable 34 points.
This left only wily old veteran Paul Greenaway to threaten Trevor's score.
Paul was born not long after the game of golf was invented, and is expecting his telegram from the queen in not too many years from now. When he was at his peak Ben Hogan reigned supreme in the world of golf.
Anyway, Paul was telling me before we played, what good form he was in the previous weekend at Hollins Hall. I listened politely, but have heard it all before and put it down to the ramblings of an old man. How wrong can you be? Paul went out in 23 points and came back in 18 despite having 3 blobs on the back 9 for a magnificent score of 41 points. A fantastic performance, by any standards, and if I can get to Paul's age and play half as well as that I will be mightily pleased.
The overall table is now getting more and more interesting, with a number of people having now played the minimum of 5 qualifying games. Can T.J. be caught? Turn up at Grange on the 13th of August to find out.
Cheers,
Mike.
