There has been a couple of Parrots events since the last news letter was published.
Three weeks ago the Parrots were at the re-arranged day out at Rossendale, but since Mike has got bored with writing his little ditties and I wasn’t there (favouring the dentist’s chair!) I have no knowledge of any titbits that took place. What I do know though, is that Andy Nurse finally won his first Parrots outing, after threatening for some time, with a fantastic score of 40pts, which amounted to a gross 76 on his handicap. So well done Andy for breaking his duck with a great round! Second on the day, a mere 4 shots back, was the ever improving Pete Corsby, who is making his own stealthy assault on the top of the 2024 leaderboard!
Then last week, was the next event which was at Nelson GC, where we have seen some mega scores in years gone by, although not so much in the last two or three visits. But it was another glorious day for the Parrots weatherwise, so would we see a return of the scoring glory days at Nelson?
First out as a three-ball (primarily due to a certain Scotsman in the society not checking the tee time and so not being able to get there in time due to other commitments, once he had been reminded by his CBC cohort!), were Jim, Pete Corsby and Paul Fineman. Promising scores here with Jim at the back of the pack with 34pts, Pete 35pts but Paul taking the group cash with 36pts, no doubt close throughout! The highlight of Pauls round was no doubt his 2 on the Par 3 11th hole …. just a pity it wasn’t a nearest the pin hole Paul?!
Second out, Glenn Riches, Bob, Tony and Steve Fineman (still with his bad back). Steve’s pain wasn’t helped by his opening tee shot only making is 20yds into the trees on the left of the 1st, but he struggled on to score a modest 29pts. Meanwhile the other three were having another ding dong with Bob sneaking the group win by one point from the other two with 36pts. Bob came back in a massive 22pts, whilst Tony had a very nice birdie on the short 5th hole.
Then we had Andy, Gareth, late arrival Matt and Pete Whiteside, on holiday in the UK from his new home in Thailand! Matt was still on the phone to work as he was about to tee off the first and that old adage, don’t bring your work problems to the golf course was proved correct, result 24pts! Sacre bleu! Gareth and Pete had modest rounds of 32pts each (birdie for Andy also at the 5th), but the group winner here was Gareth with 35pts.
So we come to the last group of myself, Mike, Derek and Luke. It was clear from the off that Derek was in form and despite our best efforts Derek took the front 9 with 21pts to 20pts me and 19pts Mike (despite us both having birdies on the Par 5 3rd hole). Luke was having a wayward day, so much so, I rarely saw anything of my partner during the round, but miraculously he still managed to score 31pts …. How does he do it?! Despite the front nine being close though, on the back 9, Derek just put his foot on the accelerator and left us all in the rearview mirror. He took the NTP prize on the Par 3 13th hole and went on to match his front nine score and amass 42pts overall, an excellent score which, of course, won the day. Meanwhile Mike finished with 34pts and myself 36pts, which did include another birdie 2 at the Par 3 16th hole for the second NTP prize (see Paul, that’s the way to do it!).
So congratulations to Derek for a great score and the win, with Bob’s unbeaten back nine meaning that he took the second place card play-off from myself and Paul. Well done Bob.
That win has propelled Derek to the top of the table, can he stay there?!
Handicap changes from Nelson are as follows :-
Derek Abrahams 16 to 14
Bob Summers 25 to 24
Matt Murphy 25 to 26
Next up is Carus Green on Wednesday 7th August, I won’t see you there as I’ll be on holiday, but have a great time! Paul, make sure you check the tee time!
