Course : Bentham Golf Club
Date: Wednesday 5th October 2022
Weather: Wet with Heavy Rain
Match Report : Compiled by Tony Robinson
Gentlemen, As our Intrepid Leader Mr Michael Barnes and his Second Lieutenant Mr Glenn Wellard were both unavailable to witness the Finale to the Parrots Golf Society season. I have been asked to provide the details of the results from the last fixture at a very wet Bentham Golf Club.
A very brave, (some may say stupid) 11 players attended a wet Bentham Golf Club for our rearranged fixture from the previous week. We did actually did have 12 players in the clubhouse prior to commencement of play however unfortunately our “Capitan” Mike decided that either the Double Black Pudding he ate from the excellent breakfast was playing havoc with his digestive system or quite frankly he just doesn't like playing or have the balls to play in the rain! Nevertheless he decided to abandon us so that he could go home to pack his Thong and Sunglasses for his sunny trip to meet up with his son in the sunnier climes of Gibraltar.
So as tradition goes the last game of the season means we go out in reverse order of the overall leaderboard. Well sod tradition we thought, as Frank's absence should have promoted myself to the final group. However as both Derek and myself and Bill Pye and Pete Whiteside had already booked buggies it was decided that Glenn Riches would be promoted to the final group to witness the shootout with the Superstars, The “Buggy Boys” would go out second which left Martin, Stuart and the Finest of the Finemen, Paul to go out first.
So How did it all pan out?
There were prizes of £10 for all four Par 3's and these were won by Paul's fantastic shot to 8 feet on the 6th. I am delighted to say that Martin Pearce won his first ever monetary winnings with the Society by being nearest the pin on the 8th. Derek's was the nearest of the three on the green from his group on the 10th , however this was all surpassed by Bill Pye who played the shot of the day to 6 foot on the17th.
I have to say that in my three years of Society golf with the Parrots I had never witnessed the “Wet Stuff falling from the Skies” because, as you know, Mike always promises and delivers sunshine. So today's miserable weather should have made a massive dent into any decent scores or to have any dramatic effect and changes to the overall leaderboard or so we thought!!!!
To my amazement all ELEVEN players scored over the magical 30 point barrier which we all class as a decent round. The scores were as follows
9th = with 31 points Gareth, Derek and Bill
6th= with 32 points Steve, Martin and Stuart
4th= with 33 points Glenn Riches and Andy Nurse
3rd with 34 points Pete Whiteside
2nd with 36 points Paul Fineman
1st with 37 points Tony Robinson
Handicap changes from today were :-
Tony Robinson 19 to 17
Paul Fineman 22 to 21
Overall Leaderboard :-
Gareth Lunn won the prize of £25 for best score ot the season with his incredible round of 45 points achieved earlier in the year at Chorley Golf Club.
Todays scores resulted in a couple of changes to the Final Leaderboard
Paul Finemans 36 promoted him to 5th place on 175 points ahead of Frank in 6th with 174
Although Andy Nurse improved his score by one today his total of 177 was only good enough for 4th place as today's winner Tony Robinson leapfrogged him on the final day to steal 3rd place prize money.
Steve Fineman completed a very successful season to finish 2nd on 182
Whilst our Overall Champion Golfer of the Year for 2022 was Gareth Lunn with a fantastic score of 189 points! Well done Gareth and well deserved and for all you mathematicians out there, that equates to an average score of 37.8 points per round (best five scores).
The final league table and updated handicaps for next year are already posted to the website.
On behalf of Mike, Glenn and the rest of the Parrots Golf Society make I take this opportunity to thank each and everyone of you for your participation in this years season. This year we had no fewer than 43 different players attending at least one fixture this year, which I believe is the best we have ever had.
A big thank you to Mike and Glenn for all your efforts and hard work in making this Society the brilliant success that it is. Look forward to seeing you all again next year.
Regards Tony
