Bentham 2021 Match Report

It was the fifth round of the Parrots Golf Society at a very still and muggy Bentham last Wednesday. The course was in beautiful condition and the greens perfect.

Mike had the perfect start to the day travelling to the course with the Chuckle Brothers, me and Mel. He had time to tell us about how great he played in the doubles knock out at Fleetwood and how he was having the best round of his life at Knott End when a Scouser nicked his ball. If you have not heard any of these stories, give him a lift at the next trip!

Our secretary seems to have joined today’s cancel culture and left most of the work to me Glenn and Jim. Now to the boring stuff! In the morning we played 11 holes in perfect conditions and the scores proved this. Mel won with 26 pts, more than some of us scored in the whole afternoon round! Next best were Kev with 25 pts and Frank 22 pts.

Seven more players joined us for the afternoon, after a lovely lunch of impromptu sandwiches and chips, due to staffing problems at Bentham’s clubhouse, which completed the saga of catering at Bentham played out in the previous newsletters! Before going out, Mike inspected us to make sure that nobody had their shirt hanging out or were wearing black socks!

The afternoon was won by Dave Baird with a very good 39 pts. Second was very close with 36 pts by Mike, Warren, Paul Fineman and Martin Greenaway, which Warren won on a card playoff.

Nearest the pins were Tony Robinson on the 10th and Warren on the 17th. I was in the first group and led the longest drive until two ladies behind us beat me! It was eventually won by Fleetwood’s answer to Bryson DeChambeau, Glenn. He has won all three longest drive holes he’s played this year, but asked me not to mention this!

The early leaderboard and handicap updates have been posted to the website, but the key handicap changes are as follows :-

Dave Baird 17 to 15

Warren Murphy 19 to 18

Paul Fineman 24 to 23

Frank Healey 13 to 14

Geoff Moyle 26 to 27

It is Hawkstone Park this weekend. We will let you know all about this later. The next Parrots day outing is at Knott End on Wednesday 30th June. Hope to see you all there.

Stay Safe! The Feisty Former Firefighter
