Match Report 2015 Heysham Golf Club
After a short delay whilst a game of hunt the scorecard was played in order to check the winners score (step forward Pete Whiteside, the new card magician; ‘I found it when I got home’), here is the first report of the 2015 Parrots Golf Society season.
Owing to the handicap secretary’s commitments to that other side of life outside golf, I was only able to attend for the afternoon and also had to leave before the traditional ‘We’ve had a lovely day, haven’t we.....’ speech by Mike. So this report is probably lacking much substance........ ‘much as normal then’ I hear Mike saying in my head!.
Although....... these circumstances were ultimately to have a massive effect on the outcome of the day, as I was able to bring with me for the afternoon an ex-firemen who was not planning to come to Heysham that day, owing to a penchant for delivering fish!
It was indeed a wonderful day, weather-wise. The sun shone from start to finish, and there were 14 contestants teeing off for the afternoon round at least.
It was no surprise then that the weather produced some good morning scores. However, the clear winner was Robbi Butler (the afternoon winner of Heysham in 2013, despite him constantly trying to deny this during my afternoon round with him!) with 21 points. Well done to Robbi.
Sadly for Robbi he couldn’t produce the same form on the same front nine in the afternoon where he returned the score of just 9! Despite this setback though, Robbi did produce one of the comebacks of the day to score 23 points on the back nine for a total of 32. The early leader in the clubhouse from the first group.
32 was also matched by our genial organiser Mike Barnes, but this was three points off the eventual second place score of 35 returned by Stuart Weston in the third group out. A two time winner from 2014, Stuart would no doubt have thought he was in with a shout for the first win of 2015.
But he reckoned without the aforementioned fish delivering ex-fireman!
Having scored just 11 points on the front nine, most people, including himself, would have written his chances off for yet another away day. But not a bit of it. Eclipsing the comeback of Robbi earlier, after delivering fish in the morning, he delivered a stunning 25 point back nine score (including finishing with four straight pars, for 14 points, on one of the toughest run-ins on the calendar), to finish with a total of 36 points and the win.
I am, of course, talking about Geoff Moyle. Well done Geoff, the first winner of the 2015 season!
Handicap changes from Heysham were :-
Geoff Moyle 28 to 25
Stuart Weston 12 to 11
Mark Thomas 22 to 23
Phil Matthews 18 to 19
So the 2015 season is well and truly underway. The early leaderboard has already been posted to the website. If you’ve forgotten the web address over the long winter it is www.parrotsgolf.co.uk
Can Geoff perform the same tricks with his trusty 7 wood at Silverdale on 6th May, which is where the tour heads next? Turn up to find out!
