Match Report 2015 Clitheroe Golf Club
The visit to Clitheroe was the fifth day out of the Parrots golf season, although it represents the seventh qualifying round as a result of the weekend at Portal, even though the leaderboard shows it as the eighth round, because of the postponement of Preston. Everyone clear?!
The day was forecast to be very hot with the temperature touching the 80’s in degrees Fahrenheit in the afternoon, and it didn’t disappoint. As a result the day attracted the joint highest turnout of the year of 16 players for the afternoon round.
Since this report is being produced very late due to prior commitments of the handicap secretary, my memories of the day are fading fast, but I think Frank Healey won the morning round with a score I can’t remember, sorry Frank!
The afternoon round produced a number of good scores with no less than 10 of the 16 players reaching 30 points or more. Not only that, but five point holes only come around once in a blue moon, and even less when Trevor Middleton isn’t playing, but today we had two! Luke Palmer had a five pointer with a birdie on the 6th and Mark Thomas the other with a birdie on the 12th (both of course with two handicap shots on the hole). Well done them.
It looked as though it was going to be a close contest as with one group to come in, Martin Greenaway was leader in the clubhouse with 33 points from three players on 32 points. However, that last group was to produce the shock of the season so far. Two of that group also had 33 point scores, the best back nine of which gave Frank Healey the edge over the others, and ultimately second place on the day.
But eclipsing all comers was a massive score of 42 points from the newly retired Mel Johnson, who must have been left thinking, “if that’s what retirement can do for my golf, why didn’t I retire earlier?!”
So congratulations to Mel who was the overwhelming winner and sets the new high score target for the season, beating the 39 I had just posted at Portal (drat!).
Handicap changes from Clitheroe are :-
Mel Johnson 19 to 17
Frank Healey 17 to 16
Martin Cook 14 to 15
Paul Greenaway 23 to 24
The website is updated to the latest standings, and Geoff Moyle retains his lead at the top with seven players now having reached five scores or more.
Next up is Kirkby Lonsdale in, errr, four days time! (15th July).
