Match Report 2014 Windermere Golf Club
The third Parrots Golf Society day of 2014 was held at Windermere Golf Club yesterday. Given the weather on the day, which was glorious, there was no better place to be playing golf, on a nice golf course amongst a panorama of mountain scenery from Coniston Old Man, through Scafell Pike to the Helvelyn range. Not only that but the largest turn-out of the year so far, meant that 18 competitors were in attendance, including a first outing for new society member Bill Pye.
Only 18 holes were scheduled, and played by most, however three players continued with another round after the competition 18 finished. Now you might think that Geoff Moyle, always keen to get value for money on a golf course, would be one of them, but not this time. The three in question were Jim Clayton, Martin Greenaway and Mike Barnes, who was no doubt hoping to improve on the 23 pts he managed first time round!
I can also report there was a marked improvement in Trevor Middleton’s fitness levels at Windermere, as there was not a single report of trolley pushing assistance on another somewhat hilly course. Perhaps he has been working out in the intervening two weeks since Stand!
Anyway, onto the golf itself. The good weather produced, as ever, good scoring generally, with 9 players scoring 34 pts or better and hence shaving something off their handicap. I can also report that the first Eagle of the season was recorded by yours truly on the Par 4 9th hole, driving the green and sinking the 10 foot putt, luvvly jubbly! The rule of eagles being double bits also had to be dusted down as well, despite the protestations of my playing partners!
On another day 38 pts from both John Patterson and Geoff Moss may have been enough to secure the win, however today they were only good enough for joint 3rd. Great scores nevertheless. Even an excellent 39 pts by Martin Greenaway was only sufficient to claim 2nd place. This score meant that Martin had gone round in an excellent gross 73 (Par 67) playing his first round with a new set of irons. Martin says he hasn’t got used to his new irons yet, so when he does it’s possible that he may be playing off scratch by the end of the season! It also means he has some difficult decisions to make as to how to get at least four more scores in for the season versus topping up his pension fund by working on a Wednesday!
However, taking 1st place with a magnificent 40 pts was Pete Whiteside making himself the third different winner of the year. Pete had 10 par’s including one on the long Par 3 last, which effectively sealed the win with a back nine 22 pts. Minutes after Pete had been confirmed as the winner, the lobbying of the handicap secretary began for him to be lenient with his handicap reduction! Fat chance!
So congratulations to Pete, also another first time winner on the Parrots Golf Society tour.
Handicap changes from Windermere were :-
Pete Whiteside 13 to 12
