Match Report 2014 Heysham Golf Club
The first Parrots Golf Society day was held at Heysham Golf Club yesterday, under a ‘cloud’ of speculation as to whether a rain front would stay just west of Heysham as forecasted or would wander too far east and turn the day into a wash out. As it turned out the day was predominantly dry with just a couple of brief showers affecting play for no more than a hole or two. Phew!
Having played in the group that provided both the morning and afternoon winners, I could go into chapter and verse on the quality golf that I was witness to, but I would only be berated by Michael, so here’s the abridged version.
The morning 9 holes was a close affair with Geoff Moss just taking it with a very steady 18 points, finished off with an excellent par on the last after being in trouble off the tee. So well done Geoff for being the first morning winner of the year.
The afternoon round was a story of those who could stay the distance and those that couldn’t. At the half way stage, there were a number of good rounds taking shape, but in particular Tony Johnson with 18 points and Mike Barnes and Frank Healey with 21 points apiece. However, two of these challengers could not match the staying power of the third, so whilst Tony and Mike finished with very good scores of 34 and 35 points respectively, the clear winner was a magnificent 41 points from Frank Healey, six points clear of Mike in 2nd place.
Franks' round included a birdie and two nearest the pins (at much expense of his playing partners) and ‘up and downs’ for par on the last two Par 3’s that Phil Mickelson himself would have been proud of! So well done to Frank as the first day winner, who will also carry a 6 point lead to the next Round in the early standings, and of course, sets an early contender for highest score of the year.
Handicap changes from Heysham were as follows:-
- Frank Healey 17 to 15
- Tony Johnson 27 to 26
- Mark Thomas 22 to 23
- Phil Matthews 17 to 19
Latest handicaps are available here.
Next up is Stand on the 7th May, so there are a couple of weeks for those who need to put in a bit of practice before the next round, which sadly includes myself!!
Cheers Glenn
